Inspired by beloved works like Charlotte’s Web and The Trumpet of the Swan, this contest celebrates storytelling that is kind, curious, and wise. E.B. White didn’t just invent talking animals—he gave them personalities, thoughts, fears, and wonder. Now it’s your turn to try.

What if your dog could write about your family dinners?

What would a squirrel say about the humans rushing through the park every day?

With the E.B. White Animal Perspective Junior Contest, young writers (ages 13 and under) are invited to step into paws, feathers, fur—or even hooves—and tell a story through the eyes of an animal.

What’s This Contest All About?

Students are challenged to write a 300–600 word story told from the point of view of an animal—realistic or lightly magical.

Your animal might be watching humans from afar or might be part of their daily lives. From a stray cat in a bookstore to a bird perched above a playground, every perspective reveals something special.

But there's one twist.... Your story must include a moment of quiet or reflection. Because just like in Charlotte’s Web, sometimes the most meaningful moments are the softest.

Tips for Young Writers

  • Choose an animal that fascinates you. Dog, crow, turtle, or spider—each sees the world differently.

  • Use animal senses. What does your creature smell, see, hear, or feel that a human might miss?

  • Let your setting shape the story. Is your character in a zoo? A barn? A family home? Where they are matters.

  • Leave us with a feeling. The best stories don’t just entertain—they help us understand something new about life, love, or even loneliness.

Why It’s Worth Entering

This is more than just a fun writing challenge. It’s a chance for young storytellers to build creativity, confidence, and craft. Winners receive international recognition, digital awards, and the opportunity to be featured in our Legacy Anthology.

So if you're a young writer—or a parent or teacher of one—this is the perfect chance to bring a young voice to life.
